Research experience

  • 2016.02~Present: Associate Professor, Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering, College of Engineering, Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), South Korea.
  • 2011.02~2016.02: Assistant & Associate (since 2013) Professor, Department of Human and Systems Engineering, Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST), South Korea.

Research goal

  • Develop novel human factors and ergonomics methodologies, techniques and models (especially digital human modeling, biomechanics and ICT based) to understand human capabilities, limitations, and interactions among humans and other elements of a system
  • Design human-centered products and systems for improving safety, health, comfort and human performance through multidisciplinary approach

Research area

 
Fall risk assessment, interactive intervention and fall prevention

•Utilize wearable sensors to develop mobile, low-cost and home-based fall risk self-assessment (with diagnostic ability), interactive intervention and automatic fall detection systems for the ageing population.
Research topics: (1) Study mechanisms of human balance and fall risk control;  (2) Design tools for fall risk assessment & diagnosis; (3) Develop innovative products or interactive interventions such as exergames for reducing risks of falling; (4) Design and develop intelligent fall detection systems.
 
 

Digital human modeling (DHM) and ergonomic product design

•Explore generalized strategies for ergonomic design and manufacturing of custom-fit products (such as footwear, clothing, helmets, PPE etc.) with good fit and comfort.
Research topics: (1) Digital human modeling; (2) Physical fit and comfort evaluation; (3) Product configuration, advanced manufacturing and sizing.
 

Human-Machine Interface (HMI) and User Experience (UX)

•Investigate human interaction and user experience (UX) with new products/technologies such as gesture based interfaces, head-mounted display(HMD), VR technologies.
Research topics: (1) Exergaming; (2) VR motion sickness;
(3) Technology acceptance and applications in healthcare, entertainment and military industries.


Human behavior, performance analysis and modeling 


•Measure, analyze and model human behavior, performance by considering both physical and cognitive aspects.
Research topics: (1) Human behavior acquisition and measuring systems; (2) Human performance analysis and modeling (especially sports analytics and data science); (3) Safety evaluation and management of complex systems.
