Message from the Head

In today’s world, we are observing the massive emergence and advance of new technologies at an unprecedented pace. These technologies have been and will continue to be the drivers to push innovations in many industries. On the other hand, there is a growing need in our society that awaits solutions from these future technologies, and these needs are the pulls for innovations in our society. Over the last decade, KAIST ISysE has gone through significant efforts to respond to the challenges and opportunities brought about by these technological and socioeconomic changes.
First, we laid a cultural foundation for interdisciplinary research by boldly hiring more than 50% of new people from disciplines other than industrial engineering. Second, we embraced with agility the technology shift from traditional industrial engineering to data science and artificial intelligence. The merger with KSE graduate program in 2016 further solidified this shift as well as reiterating our emphasis on service industry. Then, for the last few years, we established a strong culture of pragmatic research with a particular drive toward collaboration with industry partners in manufacturing industry. All these changes seem rather uncommon for an industrial engineering department, and our unique strength has been well recognized as evidenced by recent achievements. The achievements we accrued in last few years are largely in the manufacturing sector. These successes are founded on our department’s long-standing expertise and knowledge in manufacturing domain. We are confident that we are prepared to repeat our success for creating high impact research in the service industry.
Moving forward, we define our strategic focus for research and education to be the smartization of the way industries operate: smartization of goods/infra supply and smartization of service supply. For the next decade, our major efforts will be on building the core competence in each of the three major pillars as follows: 1) Breakthroughs in OR by integrating AI/ML with OR, 2) Platform technologies for analytics to aid dissemination of its impact in industries, and 3) Understanding of human behaviors and decision making in the smartized environment.
As we have done so in the past, we will continue our dedication to striving for the best, first, and only in research an education, to fostering open and caring community, and to promoting highest level of ethics as a global citizen. With highly talented faculty, bright students and competent staff, we will soon establish ourselves as a global elite department who shapes the future of industrialization.
