User-generated content such as product reviews and question answers becomes increasingly influential for decision making and knowledge discovery. Helpfulness votes can highlight the usefulness of each content by the wisdom of crowds, but voting is a social process that can gain momentum based on the popularity of content and the polarity of existing votes. This talk demonstrates the Chinese Voting Process (CVP) that models the evolution of helpfulness votes as a self-reinforcing process dependent on position and presentation biases. This study evaluates the CVP on Amazon product reviews and more than 80 major StackExchange forums, inferring the intrinsic quality of individual content and measuring the behavioral factors: Trendiness and Conformity of different communities. Introducing several future works that incorporate counterfactual evaluations at the end, the talk proposes a new direction that combines computational tools in modeling the world and modeling the bias.
